Review Album: May - Rock Klasik
I have to apologise to the band if this doesn't go well with the malay convetion that its better to say nothing than critique. That is if they ever get chance upon this.
Mutilated, all these great songs have been defaced, watered-down into something undeservingly unpalatable. After listening to track 1, I was so ashamed of being caught listening to them that I had to wait until everyone was asleep to continue listening to the rest!
I say this with conviction, because like many others I too grew up in the 80's, saving up what ever "duit belanja" I had to buy cassettes from victoria music center pertama or the legendary kedai auntie, or even pasaraya billion near school. If you read the musicians line-up in the album, guitar strings would snap, fret-boards would buckle, amps and drum sets would self combust (to be a bit over board & theatrical) in awe. I mean.. its Mus were talking about here, Abu, Yus & Man.. these guys made albums like Rahsia, Hakikat & Dilema. Upon hearing them on Juara2 Rock, they were the most highly anticipated band to debut on album. And.. J. Yantzen! seriously with the gems he put out with Rusty Blade.. oh, that ex-Lipanbara guy Oney (I wouldn't actually put him in the same league, sorry dude.)
I now understand fully when John Fogerty said after playing CCR songs again after 20 odd years that he wouldn't want to play them any other way. He went on to say that if you cannot do justice to the songs with new "intrepertations" just play them as they were written. (lebih kurang la cam tu dia kata, not exactly)
There have been a steady trend of bands in Malaysia in the recent past dishing out remade songs, beginning with Kamikaze's Interpretasi, XPDC did a few, Underground Band's tribute to Sweet Charity & Cromok, Sil Khannaz's - Darah Muda, to the latest one I had the opportunity of listening was an excellent attempt by DefGabC, RWD0106, an entirely live take album of remade songs (now thats worth listening to). Not all were good I must say, but there were ones that stood out. Maybe not in the whole album, but some of these remakes were even outstanding!
Lets get back to the album.in question:-

I would normally not bother to go out of my way to look up a remake album unless I know or at least have heard of the band.
Come on la its MAY! original line-up, sure they were worth a listen. I was dead wrong.
I was expecting fresh MAY-isque-of-old remakes. All the songs were damaged by a constant presence of keyboards, trust me if you know the type of keyboards I'm talking about the omni-present long noted ones that plagues Malay songs of the nineties. This was not a step forward, it was an unnecessary step into mediocrity!
The arrangements of the songs were even worse, uninspiring & bland. I could not see any presence of the band that made those albums I said much earlier, except for maybe Abu's solo's. It shows that that was the formula; get decents solo's and just fill other parts of the songs with sound (or noise?).
The singing? Please MUS, please don't ever sing Srikandi Cinta Ku again, ever! I don't want to even start on the others. I beggars belief to say the least.
I want to be fair to the band, I've tried to find the logic behind putting out such a MONSTROCITY, but I fould nothing, commercially or artistically. To me nothing is enough of an excuse for MAY to come out with Rock Klasik.
It goes to show the state of mainstream music in Malaysia, bands no longer have the confidence to be creative. Even the bulk of great bands in our mainstream stable have never been confident enough to cut albums entirely of their own material, but at least they managed to be in control of how the songs came out, one could identify bands according to the sound of the guitar. Kid had/has his own sound, so does Izo, Man Kidal, Khalid Mobin, Joe & Opie etc. But things have gotten worse, these great bands have become even more timid, Search was the last to come out with an album, but guess what, the album was not entirely written by them either!
Don't waste your time looking this album up, Stick to the originals. I've spared you the aural needlessness.

O2 ORANGE RANGE (Japan)
Group ni nama dia O2. Lagu ok la boleh layan la. siapa yang minat anime Naruto tu ini la lagu soundtrack dia. Video klip best. Basically muzik-muzik genre rock di Jepun macam 02 ni la jugak. Commercial Rock. Ada jugak hard rock music tapi tak sesedap mana. Kat Jepun ni kebanyakan lagu-lagu semua cuba di Americanize kan tak kira apa genre sekalipun. Tak berapa nak jadi la jugak. One or two songs boleh la layan.
TERINGAT ZAMAN-ZAMAN AKU ROCK GILERRR
Loudness (Heavy Chain) Siapa yang tak ingat zaman-zaman tahun 80 an. Zaman rock seluar ketat. Kasut Aliph. Siapa yang tak ingat. Masa tu siapa yang pakai seluar ketat (stretch fit) confirm dia rock. Seluar ketat ni zaman tu murah je dalam RM15 je. kat supermarket banyak jual. Teringat zaman sekolah bila nak balik kampung je. Pekena seluar ketat sikit, rambut ala-ala Rock Glam Poison (bagi yang rambut kerinting susah sikit) pergh rasa mcm artis je rasa. Tapi still zaman tu rasa best sebab early explosion of rock genre kat Malaysia. Dengan Search Cinta Buatan Malaysia nya. Amacam terkenang tak zaman tu?
